Here is a wonderful explanation of The GAPS Diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) by the creator Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride herself! Enjoy!

Shannon Penrod: We are so thrilled and so fortunate we have a very special guest that is joining us via Skype from halfway around the world. We have Dr. Natasha Campbell-Mcbride with us, she is the author of the Gut and Psychology Syndrome and you guys may be more familiar with something called The GAPS Diet. And she is the expert who can explain to you but asking overwhelmingly, "What is the GAPS diet?" So Dr. Campbell McBride, thank you so much for joining us this morning.

Dr. Natasha: Good morning.

Shannon Penrod: And it's evening where you are. So I should say "Good Evening" to you, but please can you take a moment and tell our viewers what the GAPS diet is?

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride: GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome and it basically explains how autism is caused, how it develops in the body.

Vast majority of these children are born with a perfectly normal brain, but they acquire abnormal gut flora from day one of their life from their parents. Their abnormal unhealthy mixture of microbes populate their digestive system and it turns their digestive system-- instead of being a source of nourishment into a major source of toxicity. And river of toxins flows from this sick gut to the brain of the child and clogs the brain with toxicity.

You know that small children learn by using their sensory organs. They listen to everything. They'll look at everything. They touch everything. They take everything into their mouth. What are they doing? They're using their sensory organs, their ears, their eyes, their tactile sensitivities in their taste buds..

You know that you collect the information from the environment and then that information is passed to the brain to be processed and that's how the child learns that this is Mommy and this is Daddy and these are toys-- I play with them like this. And this is food, I eat it, this is how I copy people, and so on.

But in a child with abnormal gut flora, toxins block up the brain and the brain is unable to process the sensory information appropriately. All this inflammation turns into a noise, into a mush in the child's brain. And from that noise, the child cannot decipher anything useful and cannot learn. So autistic children do not learn that this is Mommy and Daddy. They are known to pick up a hand of any stranger on the street and walk away because Mommy and Daddy don't mean any more than anybody else.

They don't know what to do with toys, with other children, with the environment. So in order to help a child like that, we need to stop that river of toxicity coming into the brain. And in order to do that, we need to change the gut flora of the child. We need to remove the pathogens from there and replace them with beneficial flora. And we need to heal and seal the gut lining because the abnormal flora in these children damages the gut lining of the child and it becomes porous and leaky like a sieve. So undigested foods absorb, triggering allergies and intolerances and other reactions in the body, and the whole river of toxicity absorbs. And alive pathogenic microbes absorb and get distributed around the body. And of course, the immune system can't stand by and do nothing about the situation, that joins in, in the whole Party.

And it detoxes the brain as well, it launches an autoimmune attack on the brain. And as a result, you have an abnormal brain function.

If a child has a different constitution and different mixture of toxins coming in from the gut to the brain, the child may not be diagnosed autistic, but will be diagnosed, hyperactive or with another form of Attention Deficit Disorder or Dyslexic or Dyspraxia or Oppositional Defiant or something else. And when the level of toxicity builds too high in the brain then, in a proportion of these children, the brains develop, a cleansing, survival procedure when it sends one electric discharge through and cleans the whole lot of toxins out and that manifests itself as an epileptic seizure.

Last thing these children need is another toxin added in the equation, in the form of anti-epileptic medication. What they need is a GAPS nutritional protocol. That's what all of these children need.

GAPS nutritional protocol. What is GAPS Nutritional protocol?

It has three parts to it. GAPS Diet, detoxification, and supplementation.

And all three parts are described in great detail in my book called Gut and Psychology Syndrome, and also my website. The whole information is there.
